Updated Haircare Routine

I’ve written a couple of these posts in the past but have changed most of the products in my routine since as my hair has changed from flat and oily to a more dry and frizzy texture.

Shampoo & Conditioner

The shampoo and conditioner I use still changes quite often but the ones that I have been loving at the moment are from the OGX coconut milk range. My hair is left feeling extremely soft and nourished yet not weighed down.

Mousse

To give my hair some volume I like to use the L’Oreal Paris Elnett satin strong hold mousse, it smells absolutely divine and stops my hair falling flat for days without leaving that horrible sticky feeling.

Oil

The L’Oreal Elvive extraordinary oil is my favourite as its extremely lightweight and leaves my hair looking sleek and smooth. I usually use it on wet hair but if my hair is feeling particularly dry or static i like to rub a little bit between my palms and run it over my ends to help tame them.

Hair Mask

The only thing that hasn’t really changed in my haircare routine over the past five years is coconut oil; I slather it all over my hair once or twice a week, leave it in overnight and then wash it out in the morning. It helps my hair to grow long and leaves it both feeling and looking healthy.

Brush

To brush my hair I’m still using my Tangle Teezer as it’s so gentle and isn’t too rough on my scalp. When my hair is wet I use a wide tooth comb to avoid breakage.

Dry Shampoo

I like to use the Batiste dry shampoo to keep my hair looking clean between washes; I spray it into my roots the night before so it soaks up the oils overnight.

Updated Haircare Routine For Long Hair

I did a haircare routine back in April 2013 but since then most of the products that I used have changed; so I decided to create an updated post informing you how I maintain my long, fine hair.

Shampoo And Conditioner

I tend to switch out my shampoo and conditioner quite a lot, but lately i’ve been using the L’Oreal Elvive Fibrology line and I’m loving it! It makes my hair look so much thicker and volumised whilst still feeling smooth and sleek.

Hair Oil

After running out of my beloved Liz Earle Botanical Shine Nourishing Hair Oil I decided to try out the OGX Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil Penetrating Oil as it is slightly more affordable at £6.99 from Boots. It claims to ‘penetrate the hair shaft restoring shine and softness whilst strengthening’ the hair. I’m not 100% sure about the strengthening part as I’ve only used it for a few weeks, but it does make your hair soft, shiny and manageable without leaving any sort of residue. All is spread a small amount (about the size of a 20p piece) throughout the lengths and ends of my damp hair and then  comb it through to distribute. Then when I blow dry my hair it’s left both feeling and looking glorious.

Root Lifting Spray

I recently started to use the Dove Oxygen Moisture Root Lift Spray to add volume to my roots, read what I think about it here.

Heat Protection

I use the Avon advance techniques heat protection styler if I’m going to blow dry, straighten or curl my hair, which isn’t very often. This spray is light, affordable and smells lovely which is always a bonus.

Hair Mask

I use coconut oil weekly to  help keep my hair and scalp healthy. Read about how I use it here.

Brushes

As for brushes I’m still using my tangle teezer which you can read about in my last haircare routine post.  I also use a wide tooth comb when my hair is wet to avoid any unnecessary breakage.

Tips for growing long hair

  • Cut down on washing your hair. I’ve got extremely fine hair and I found this step hard when I was growing out my hair as I always felt like my hair looked so greasy on the second day! Just use some dry shampoo (batiste is my favourite) and try and make the time between washing longer, after a few weeks you’ll start to notice that your hair doesn’t look as greasy on the days after washing and you’ll notice huge amounts of hair growth  after a couple of months, trust me! I only wash my hair twice a week now and it has never been so long and healthy.
  • Do coconut oil hair masks. Coconut oil is absolutely amazing for your hair, saturate both your scalp and ends in it, cover with a shower cap and sleep on it. Yes you’ll look crazy but it’s honestly worth it! When you wake up, shampoo your hair twice and it will be left feeling like silk. It will also help with growth as it’s keeping your scalp healthy too.
  • Stop using hot tools! Using straighteners or curlers on your hair daily makes it brittle and more likely to break, meaning your goal of long hair will never be achieved. I’m not saying never use them, just try and cut it down to once or twice a week.

Quick Tip – Coconut Oil For Healthy Hair

Slather organic coconut oil all over your hair from root to tip, massage it in and leave on overnight with a shower cap over to protect your pillowcases. The next morning wash it off and you’ll be left with gorgeous, soft, smooth hair. This also helps if you’re trying to grow out your hair as it keeps both your hair and scalp healthy.

Haircare Routine For Long Hair

I’ve finally found the perfect hair routine to suit my long, straight oily yet dry hair so i thought i would share it with you all.

Shampoo and conditioner

Lets start off with the basics; shampoo and conditioner.

I like to change up my shampoo and conditioner a lot; this is not only because I’ve heard your hair can get used to them and they wont work as well, but because I just love trying out new products. The ones i am using (and loving) at the moment are the Tresemme moisture rich shampoo and conditioner. These smell lovely and leave my hair feeling really clean and soft, and they’re a good price too at £3.59 for a 500ml bottle at Boots.

Once a week i also like to use my Lush solid shampoo bar in ‘new’ which i have a review of here (http://youniquechic.com/2012/02/review-lush-new-solid-shampoo-bar/) to give my hair a deep clean and remove any build up.

Deep treatments

I try to do my Tresemme Keratin Smooth hair mask once or twice a week to give my hair a deep condition. This treatment leaves your hair feeling gorgeously soft and healthy and is extremely convenient as it can be left on for a few minutes in the shower after shampooing then rinsed out.

If my hair is really feeling awful and just needs a really deep moisturise i like to slather coconut oil all over it and leave it in for an hour or so to sink in then wash it out. This also gives amazing results but takes a lot longer than the Tresemme option so i only do it if i have time to spare.

Styling

I don’t really use styling products regularly, and haven’t found my holy grail heat protectant product yet so i have nothing to reccomend on that front. However, after shampooing i really like to use the Tresemme split remedy leave in conditioner to help smooth my ends and help me to comb through my knotty hair.

Brushes

I recently purchased a tangle teezer brush and have absolutely no idea how i lived without one for so long! It brushes tangles out of my hair extremely gently and doesn’t pull out any unnecessary hairs. It can also be used in the shower and is the perfect size for carrying around in my bag, all around amazing brush i couldn’t reccomend it enough!

Top 5 Summer Essentials

I’m going to share with you 5 of my absolute essential skin and hair care items for these hot summer months.

Lipbalm

My lips always get extremely dry and cracked during the summer, so I always make sure that I use a good quality lip balm with SPF in it to not only stop them getting chapped, but to protect them from the sun too.

One of my favourites at the moment is Carmex cherry lip balm as it lasts for ages on my lips, smells amazing and has SPF 15.

Sunscreen

It’s also extremely important to protect your skin from the sun, so I use Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock.

I’ve got a review of this here.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil is absolutely brilliant. It can be used as a hair mask twice a week to help promote healthy growth and leaves your hair feeling so soft! All you do is apply it from root to tip, then leave it for at least half an hour and wash it out. It’s also a brilliant moisturiser to use on those drier areas such as your elbows and knees.

Light Moisturiser

Having oily skin in the summertime is awful, it just seems to look ten times worse. However, changing my moisturiser during the summer to Neutrogena’s visibly clear oil free moisturiser helps to stop my skin getting as shiny throughout the day. The extremely light formula also helps to prevent breakouts.

BB cream

BB cream is a great alternative to foundation during the summer as it covers up any imperfections whilst still being extremely lightweight and natural looking. I use Garnier’s BB cream, you can find a review here.

I hope i’ve given you some tips or ideas.

Weekly Favourite

Each week I’m going to tell you about my favourite thing; whether it be a person, product or something else.

My favourite this week is Coconut oil.

Product Image For <br />Pure Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has been an absolute staple in my daily routine; it removes my make up, moisturises my skin and leaves my hair unbelievably soft and healthy.

I got my coconut oil from Holland and Barrett, however I’m sure you’ll be able to find it in similar shop near you.

My most used..

Everyone has those few staple items which they really couldn’t replace, despite how many new things they buy. For example; a bag which goes with every outfit, or a pair of extremely comfortable shoes.

I’m going to show you my all time favourite items, from clothes to make up.

My most used:

Lipstick

This lipstick is amazing, it is extremely moisturising and gives your lips the perfect subtle peachy/orange colour. It is from Avon and is in the shade ‘silky peach’.

Foundation

I use this mineral foundation on a daily basis. It gives an extremely natural look as if you aren’t wearing foundation at all, whilst still covering  your imperfections. Mine is in the shade ‘fairly light’.

 Blusher

This blusher is from The Body Shop and is in the shade ’01 Petal’. It’s absolutely brilliant and gives even the dullest skin an instant, natural looking glow.

Nail Polish

I love this coral coloured nail polish from Collection 2000. The shade (‘fruit salad’) is perfect for summer and lasts for a long time.

Perfume

I honestly couldn’t choose a favourite between these two perfumes, they both smell amazing! Loverdose by Diesel is quite a strong scent, whereas Elizabeth Arden’s Sunflowers is light, fresh and perfect for everyday wear.

Hair product

This leave in conditioner from Avon is a life saver, it makes my hair so soft and lasts for three washes. I apply it once a week to the ends of my hair after showering and it helps to prevent split ends and keeps my hair looking and feeling healthy.

Moisturiser

The Body Shop’s coconut body butter is absolutely brilliant; it smells amazing, sinks in really well and keeps my skin so soft.

Earrings

These earrings are my absolute favourite;  they go with everything and are the perfect size. Unfortunately, I’m not sure where they’re from as they were a birthday gift.

Bag

I got this bag from H&M last year and I haven’t stopped wearing it since. It’s a really good size and allows me to carry just the right amount.

Shoes

These shoes go with everything and are extremely comfortable. They were a bargain too; I got them for £10 from Madhouse.

Coat

I wear this coat from from House of Fraser constantly; the leather is so soft and it is extremely flattering. It was a little bit pricey originally, however I got it on sale for £100 from £275 .

Top 3 lip balms/butters

I’ve relied on Carmex for many years to keep my lips smooth and crack free. The moisture plus lip balm is absolutely amazing!
It retails for around £4.50 and keeps your lips soft and protected (spf 15) as well as giving it a slight tint and glossy finish, it also smells absolutely amazing. There are a few colours available so there should be one to suit you. Perfect for protecting your lips in these cold winter months.

The Body shop’s lip butters are brilliant, they come in a variety of flavours and smell divine! They melt into your lips, instantly hydrating them and leaving them feeling amazing! Coconut is my absolute favourite, but of course its not for everyone.

Chapstick is also amazing. It is easy to apply, has SPF protection and helps to heal dry and cracked lips.
There is also an amazing variety of flavours available.
