Winter Skin Essentials

As much as I love the festive season, it brings about some awful skin issues. So I’m going to share with you products that have worked for me for my hands, feet, body and lips in case any of you endure similar issues.

Hands

My hands always get extremely dry, but the winter makes them 100x worse so it’s vital that i have a good quality hand cream. I’ve tried dozens of creams from brands such as The Body Shop and Nivea but nothing works quite as well as Soap and Glory’s ‘Hand food’. It smells divine, sinks in extremely well and makes my hands feel soft and healthy.

Another quick fix is slathering coconut oil all over your hands and popping on some cotton gloves, then go to bed and voila gorgeous hands in the morning! However, if you don’t own any coconut oil you could follow this as an alternative; http://youniquechic.com/2012/06/home-made-mask-for-soft-hands-and-feet/

Body

My elbows and knees are the bane of my life at this time of year, so i make sure that i use an extremely hydrating moisturizer. My all time favourite is The Body Shop’s ‘coconut body butter’ but I’ve recently been using the ‘daily moisturizing lotion’ by Aveeno and it works amazing! It leaves my skin soft and supple and sinks in quickly so i don’t have to wait to get dressed.

I also love to exfoliate once a week with Soap and Glory’s ‘pulp friction’ to get rid of any dead skin. It smells deliciously fruity and isn’t too harsh on my sensitive skin.

Feet

I haven’t really found a foot cream i swear by yet, but i always use either coconut oil or olive oil once a week before bed and then sleep with cotton socks on. This banishes any hard skin i have, leaving my feet feeling soft and looking great.

Lips

I use this lip scrub once a week to keep my lips in tip top condition; http://youniquechic.com/2011/12/diy-lip-scrub-stop-chapped-lips/

Then i follow up with Vaseline or my mango lip butter from The Body Shop as i find these to be the most hydrating (and affordable) lip balms on the market.

Review: The Body Shop Lip And Cheek Stain

I got this product out of a magazine and didn’t really expect much of it, however after trying it out I realised just how great it is. It looks extremely bright when first applied to the lips, but after blotting it looks amazing! It gives a subtle red tint of colour which lasts for hours, and looks great with lip gloss on top too.

It also looks gorgeous when used on the apples of your cheeks as it gives the skin a rosy glow whilst still looking extremely natural. I would recommend using a small amount first then building upon it to get the desired look.

Overall, this lip and cheek stain is brilliant if you’re like me and hate having to re-apply your make up through the day.

Retails at £10
Mine is in the shade Rose Pink

Top 5 Summer Essentials

I’m going to share with you 5 of my absolute essential skin and hair care items for these hot summer months.

Lipbalm

My lips always get extremely dry and cracked during the summer, so I always make sure that I use a good quality lip balm with SPF in it to not only stop them getting chapped, but to protect them from the sun too.

One of my favourites at the moment is Carmex cherry lip balm as it lasts for ages on my lips, smells amazing and has SPF 15.

Sunscreen

It’s also extremely important to protect your skin from the sun, so I use Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock.

I’ve got a review of this here.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil is absolutely brilliant. It can be used as a hair mask twice a week to help promote healthy growth and leaves your hair feeling so soft! All you do is apply it from root to tip, then leave it for at least half an hour and wash it out. It’s also a brilliant moisturiser to use on those drier areas such as your elbows and knees.

Light Moisturiser

Having oily skin in the summertime is awful, it just seems to look ten times worse. However, changing my moisturiser during the summer to Neutrogena’s visibly clear oil free moisturiser helps to stop my skin getting as shiny throughout the day. The extremely light formula also helps to prevent breakouts.

BB cream

BB cream is a great alternative to foundation during the summer as it covers up any imperfections whilst still being extremely lightweight and natural looking. I use Garnier’s BB cream, you can find a review here.

I hope i’ve given you some tips or ideas.

Top 3 lip balms/butters

I’ve relied on Carmex for many years to keep my lips smooth and crack free. The moisture plus lip balm is absolutely amazing!
It retails for around £4.50 and keeps your lips soft and protected (spf 15) as well as giving it a slight tint and glossy finish, it also smells absolutely amazing. There are a few colours available so there should be one to suit you. Perfect for protecting your lips in these cold winter months.

The Body shop’s lip butters are brilliant, they come in a variety of flavours and smell divine! They melt into your lips, instantly hydrating them and leaving them feeling amazing! Coconut is my absolute favourite, but of course its not for everyone.

Chapstick is also amazing. It is easy to apply, has SPF protection and helps to heal dry and cracked lips.
There is also an amazing variety of flavours available.

DIY lip scrub – stop chapped lips!

Chapped lips are extremely common during the winter months, using a lip scrub once or twice a week can help to remove dead skin cells and prevent this from happening. However, it is not necessary to spend a lot of money on a lip scrub as they are simple to make at home using just a few household items.

To get soft, smooth lips you will need the following items:

1 tsp. natural honey
Small cup
1 tsp. olive oil, sweet almond oil or sunflower oil
2 tsp. granulated white sugar
1 to 2 drops essential oil (optional)
Cotton balls
Moisturiser or lip balm

Step 1:
First get a small, sterile cup and place in 1 tablespoon of natural honey. Warm the honey for around 4 minutes. Honey’s hydrating properties will give you soft lips.

Step 2:
Stir in 1 tablespoon of  oil such as olive oil or sunflower oil, which will create a protective barrier on the lips.

Step 3:
Add in two table spoons of granulated white sugar, this creates a gentle exfoliant which will remove dead skin cells.

Step 4:
Stir in a drop of lemon juice.

Step 5:
At this point you could flavour your lip scrub with mango or lemon flavoured oil.

Step 6:
With clean hands, use your fingertips to apply the scrub to your lips, use gentle circular motions. When you are finished, wipe the scrub off your lips with a damp cotton pad.

Step 7:
Finally, apply your favourite balm or moisturiser.

Using this recipe on a regular basis will stop dry, peeling lips for good!
